A Timeline of Eclipse-related Activities

For some time, Front Page Science has been planning for the total solar eclipse that will sweep across the United States on August 21, 2017. We have written blogs and stories, attended meetings, given interviews, and presented illustrated talks. Below, you’ll find a mostly complete list of our activities related to the eclipse in general, the event Front Page Science will be conducting at Rosecrans Memorial Airport, and ancillary activities we will lead. We will continue to expand this timeline through the date of the eclipse.

7 May 2014 Board of Directors of Rosecrans Memorial Airport approves the 2017 eclipse event.
7 July 2014 Bakich writes his inital eclipse-related blog “10 reasons Missouri should make August 21, 2017, a state holiday” for Astronomy.com.
5 August 2014 Blog “25 Facts you should know about the August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse” written for Astronomy.com.
20 August 2014 Rosecrans Airport Board Chairman Abe Forney gives Michael Bakich a detailed tour of the facility.
21/22 August 2014 Attended the second National Science Foundation Eclipse Planning Workshop in Columbia, MO.
21 August 2014 Presented a talk titled “Think Big” to workshop attendees.
21 August 2014 Interviewed by Philip Sitter from the Missourian student newspaper about the conference and the eclipse. Click to read.
28 August 2014 The coordinator of the NSF 2017 Eclipse Steering Committee asked Bakich to chair the “National Events” group.

15 November 2014 Participated in the second telecon of the NSF 2017 Eclipse Steering Committee.
22 November 2014 Presented a talk titled “The Greatest Sky Event Ever” to the Astronomical Society of Kansas City.
25 November 2014 The eclipse is 1,000 days away. Blog “Eclipse: T minus 1,000 Days” written for Astronomy.com and this site.
25 November 2014 Granted a 30-minute interview on KFEQ radio, St. Joseph, MO.
25 November 2014 Presented a talk titled “The Greatest Sight You’ll Ever See” to the St. Joseph Downtown Rotary Club.
29 November 2014 Created “19th-Century Views of Eclipses” and later moved it to the “Fun” page.
5 December 2014 Launched a new Facebook page about the event: “Total Eclipse 2017 St. Joseph, MO.” Click to visit.
13 December 2014 Created “Take a Break with a Word-Finder Puzzle” and later moved it to the “Fun” page.
26 December 2014 Revised the menu on this site to include more items. Added “Education,” “Fun,” and “Planning.”
3 January 2015 Added “When to Rehearse for the Eclipse” to the “Education” page.
15 and 17 January 2015 Participated in two teleconferences related to the AAS eclipse task force. Bakich volunteered to head up the public information committee.
11 February 2015 Presented a talk titled “The Greatest Sight You’ll Ever See” to the Tucson Rotary Club.
12 February 2015 Gave a live interview on Tucson radio station 1030 KVOI AM from 4:45 to 5 p.m. Great interviewer!
19 February 2015 Participated in another teleconference of the AAS eclipse task force to select an Eclipse Project Manager.
21 February 2015 Redesigned the landing page of this website. Updated the timeline. Added “Build a Solar Projector” to the “Education” page.
23 February 2015 Announced the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Podcast here and in the iTunes Store.
23 February 2015 Added “Talking About the Eclipse in Tucson” to the “Blogs” page.
25 February 2015 Added “The Greatest Eclipse Description You’ll Ever Read” to the “Fun” page.
28 February 2015 Added “A Calendar of Every Total Solar Eclipse since the Year 1” to the “Fun” page.
14 March 2015 Presented “The Greatest Sight You’ll Ever See” at Planet Comicon, a pop-culture convention in Kansas City.
20 March 2015 Posted the fifth podcast in the series “The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” podcast on iTunes.
5 April 2015 Added “Teachers at NSTA React to the Eclipse: a Cause for Concern?” to the “Blogs” page.
10 April 2015 Participated in another teleconference of the AAS eclipse task force. Bakich volunteered to screen small ($2,000 to $5,000) proposals received (if the NSF wants that section to be part of the overall grant), making recommendations.
17 April 2015 Posted the 10th podcast in the series “The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” podcast on iTunes.
6 May 2015 Added “Enjoy a Film About Eclipse Lovers” to the “Blogs” page.

26 June 2015 Posted the 20th podcast in the series “The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” podcast on iTunes.
22 July 2015 Bakich signs a contract with Springer to produce a book tentatively titled Your Guide to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse.
6 August 2015 Bakich presents an illustrated talk about the 2017 eclipse to the Northern Cross Science Foundation in Mequon, Wisconsin.
7 August 2015 Posted the 26th podcast — half a year!!! — in the series “The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” podcast on iTunes.
22-23 August 2015 Attended the third AAS 2017 Total Solar Eclipse workshop in Portland, Oregon. Presented a talk: “Let’s Keep Things Simple”

22 January 2016 Had an initial conversation with representatives from the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Bureau.

10 March 2016 The name of this website officially changed from fpsci.com to stjosepheclipse.com.
15 March 2016 The Kansas City Star runs its first major story about the eclipse and our event in St. Joseph.
15 March 2016 Celestron becomes a partner of our event.
17 March 2016 The cover of my upcoming book, Your Guide to the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse is approved.
30 March 2016 Had an initial conversation with Derrick Pitts at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia about participating in the event in St. Joseph.
3 April 2016 The St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Bureau inserts a flyer in the Sunday Kansas City Star that features an eclipse-related story written by Bakich.
6 April 2016 Bakich presents an illustrated talk about the 2017 eclipse to the Neville Public Museum Astronomical Society in Green Bay.
9 April 2016 Bakich presents an illustrated talk about the 2017 eclipse to a group at the ninth annual Swap-n-Sell at the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport.
13 April 2016 Participated in another teleconference of the AAS eclipse task force. Talked about the NSF grant, committees, and what kind of website we should create.
22 July 2016 Posted the 75th podcast in the series “The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse” podcast on iTunes.
10-11 June 2016 Attended the fourth AAS 2017 Total Solar Eclipse workshop in Carbondale, Illinois. Presented a talk: “Eclipse Preparations in St. Joseph”
